Painted Moon Farm
Painted Moon Farm is a preservation breeder of Nokota® horses, the native horses of the Northern Plains. Located outside of Madison, Georgia, the farm was established in 2006 to assist in the effort to save these beautiful creatures of our American history.
Nokota® horses are descended from ranch and Native American horses which survived in the wild in the Little Missouri Badlands from the time of the confiscation of Sitting Bull’s horses in 1881 until the 1980’s. As the National Park Service began removing the horses in the early 1980’s, Frank and Leo Kuntz stepped in to save them.
The Nokota Horse Conservancy® was established in 1999 to protect these last wild horses of North Dakota. For more information on these horses and the work of the Conservancy to preserve them, see www.nokotahorse.org.
